Norman Street in 1890

For you history buffs, this is a picture of Norman Street taken in 1890. As far as we can tell it is looking east from the corner at Summer Street towards Washington Street. The man in the picture is standing about where the Holyoke Insurance Building is today. 24 Norman Street would be on the left side of the picture beyond the tree. The old train station can just barely be seen in the distance.

Hallway Repairs and Painting

After spending several months searching for and successfully plugging leaks around the roof access doorway, the maintenance crew has begun patching the walls in the back stairway. Anyone who is familiar with the large sections of peeling paint and damaged plaster that filled the walls of the back stairwell after the flooding rains of two years ago should appreciate this. This is just in time for the scheduled painting of the entire building interior.
This should greatly improve the overall look of the entire interior.

Condo Rules and Regulations

We had a request from tenant Curt Shulz to post the 24 Norman Street Condo Rules and Regulations. Since we often discuss the condo rules (and the breaking thereof) we thought it might be a good idea. Curt has created a link here to a site where you can download a PDF version of the official condo rules.
Now if you have any questions about what is allowed and what is not, you can read them for yourself.
If there is any other document that you would like to see posted, such as the master deed, please let us know and we will do our best to get it posted. (Thank you Curt for the link)

Chestnut and Norman Streets circa 1860 and 2010

In case you were wondering what this part of Salem looked like during the Civil War, I thought I'd post a picture taken at the corner of Chestnut and Norman Streets around 1860. Next to it is a picture I took at virtually the same spot 150 years later (give or take a month or two).
I was surprised at how much of the area is still recognizable from the original photo.
Note that the railing and staircase of the building on Chestnut street has barely changed at all, while Norman Street has been transformed from a pretty residential neighborhood, into a commercial zone. Notice also the widening of Norman Street to accommodate what is now Route 114. I believe the post at the corner is the remains of the former gas lantern in the first picture.
History is all around us, especially in Salem.
