2018 Christmas Tree Bonfire

The City of Salem's 15th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire scheduled for Friday, January 5, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at Dead Horse Beach at Salem Willows has been cancelled due to the impeding snow storm and dangerously cold temperatures being forecasted for this weekend.

PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF YOUR TREES AT THE BEACH. THERE WILL BE NO BONFIRE.

If you are looking for the best way to get rid of your Christmas tree, the City of Salem's 15th Christmas Tree Bonfire is the way to go.

Bring your Christmas tree with you that evening, drop it off at the beach after January 2nd or leave it out for curbside pickup beginning January 2nd.
(In case of inclement weather, the  rain/snow/wind reschedule Date is Saturday, January 6th)

Christmas Tree Disposal-2017

Christmas is a time where homes are filled with love and holiday cheer. Unfortunately, it's also a time when homes are filled with things that will need to be disposed of, particularly your Christmas tree.
You have two options this year:

OPTION 1:
Curbside pickup
City-wide Christmas tree curbside collection will continue to take place January 9 -13, 2017. 
Please leave your tree curbside on the same day as your regularly scheduled trash day and Waste Management will pick up your tree. Trees should be on the curb bare, with no bags or decorations.
Since Christmas falls on a Sunday, trash pickup will operate on a regular schedule.

OPTION 2:
14th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire
 The City’s 14th annual Christmas tree bonfire will be held at Dead Horse Beach on Memorial Drive on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting. 
Waste Management trucks will be picking up trees curbside on the same day as your regularly scheduled trash day beginning January 2nd.  If you really want to make sure your tree is part of the bonfire, you can drop it off at the entrance to Dead Horse Beach after January 2nd or bring it to the bonfire on the 6th.

Please don't forget that all decorations and lights must be removed from your tree. 

In case of inclement weather (rain/snow/wind) the bonfire will be held on Saturday evening, January 7th at 6:00 p.m. Check www.salem.com for rescheduling information. 

Finally, DO NOT place your tree inside or next to the dumpster. 

Christmas Tree Disposal and Bonfire

For residents of 24 Norman Street who have Christmas trees to dispose of:

Please leave your tree curbside for trash pickup starting
Monday, January 4th.
OR
Leave it at Dead Horse Beach before the Christmas Tree Bonfire on  
Wednesday, January 6th, 6 pm.
OR
Put it curbside for pickup after January 11th
Mayor Kim Driscoll, the Salem Fire Department, and the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services will hold the City’s 13th  annual Christmas tree bonfire at Dead Horse Beach on Memorial Drive on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.

“The Bonfire is one more great Salem tradition,” said Mayor Driscoll. “I look forward to it every year and I know that many other residents do, as well.”

Christmas Tree Disposal Reminder

Some people like to prolong the Christmas season as long as possible. We had a discarded Christmas tree make an appearance in the side lot this week. Markwood would like to remind tenants that all Christmas trees should be disposed of before the city-wide Christmas tree pick-up, which is generally the first week of January.
We had a large collection of about 6 trees sitting out by the dumpster after Christmas. (By the way, everyone did a great job of not putting their tree into the dumpster this year, thank you!) Markwood paid maintenance to come and dispose of the trees, since we were too late putting them out by the curb for city pick-up. With this late addition, rather than having it taken all at once with the other trees, now Markwood has to pay maintenance to come again and dispose of this one tree. Hopefullly next year, everyone will be on board with getting rid of their tree in a timely fashion.
Another more interesting alternative is to take your tree to Dead Horse Beach here in Salem for the annual Christmas Tree Bonfire. Which is fun, impressive, and gives your tree the Viking funeral it really deserves.
