Christmas Tree Disposal-2017

Christmas is a time where homes are filled with love and holiday cheer. Unfortunately, it's also a time when homes are filled with things that will need to be disposed of, particularly your Christmas tree.
You have two options this year:

OPTION 1:
Curbside pickup

City-wide Christmas tree curbside collection will continue to take place January 9 -13, 2017.
Please leave your tree curbside on the same day as your regularly scheduled trash day and Waste Management will pick up your tree. Trees should be on the curb bare, with no bags or decorations.
Since Christmas falls on a Sunday, trash pickup will operate on a regular schedule.

OPTION 2:
14th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire
The City’s 14th annual Christmas tree bonfire will be held at Dead Horse Beach on Memorial Drive on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., weather permitting.
Waste Management trucks will be picking up trees curbside on the same day as your regularly scheduled trash day beginning January 2nd.  If you really want to make sure your tree is part of the bonfire, you can drop it off at the entrance to Dead Horse Beach after January 2nd or bring it to the bonfire on the 6th.

Please don't forget that all decorations and lights must be removed from your tree.

In case of inclement weather (rain/snow/wind) the bonfire will be held on Saturday evening, January 7th at 6:00 p.m. Check www.salem.com for rescheduling information.

Finally, DO NOT place your tree inside or next to the dumpster.

Christmas Tree Disposal Reminder

Some people like to prolong the Christmas season as long as possible. We had a discarded Christmas tree make an appearance in the side lot this week. Markwood would like to remind tenants that all Christmas trees should be disposed of before the city-wide Christmas tree pick-up, which is generally the first week of January.
We had a large collection of about 6 trees sitting out by the dumpster after Christmas. (By the way, everyone did a great job of not putting their tree into the dumpster this year, thank you!) Markwood paid maintenance to come and dispose of the trees, since we were too late putting them out by the curb for city pick-up. With this late addition, rather than having it taken all at once with the other trees, now Markwood has to pay maintenance to come again and dispose of this one tree. Hopefullly next year, everyone will be on board with getting rid of their tree in a timely fashion.
Another more interesting alternative is to take your tree to Dead Horse Beach here in Salem for the annual Christmas Tree Bonfire. Which is fun, impressive, and gives your tree the Viking funeral it really deserves.

Christmas Tree Update

Due to the heavy snow in early January, curbside Christmas tree pick-up for the weeks of January 6th and 13th is running behind schedule. If your tree is curbside, please leave it there. The City's contractor should have all trees picked up by Saturday, January 18th. You may also bring your tree any time to the lower field area at Gallows Hill Park on the corner of Mansell Parkway and Witch Hill Road.

Christmas Tree Disposal

Well it's that time of year again when people pack up their Christmas decorations and wrapping paper, and dispose of their Christmas trees. In past years you could take your tree to Dead Horse Beach in Salem for the Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire, but that event was recently cancelled because of the snow storm and record cold temperatures. This may leave you wondering what to do with your tree this year. As usual, some people resort to dragging it down the hallway and stairs and throwing it in the dumpster. This is not the preferred method as the trees take up so much space as to make it difficult to dispose of our regular trash.
Salem has scheduled curbside pick-up of Christmas trees as part of the regularly scheduled recycling pick-up, from Monday, January 6 2014, till Friday, January 17. Our regular trash/recycling day is Tuesday. Remove all decorations, tinsel, and lights from the tree and drag your it to the curb by the end of the driveway (do not block the driveway or the sidewalk) for Tuesday, January 7 , or missing that, Tuesday January 14, and the City of Salem will pick it up. If you miss those dates, leave the tree by the side of the dumpster rather than throwing it in the dumpster. If you have any questions, please contact Markwood Management. Thanks!

Disposing of your Christmas tree

Crowds gathered at the 7th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire watch as the trees are
engulfed in flames January 6, 2010 on Dead Horse Beach at Salem Willows Park in Salem, Massachusetts. An estimated 2,500 trees were collected by the Salem Department of Public Services for the fire. (Erik Jacobs/Boston Globe) #
It is that post-holiday time of year again, when Christmas trees need to be disposed of. If you live at 24 Norman Street please DO NOT PUT CHRISTMAS TREES THE DUMPSTER. (They take up too much space in the dumpster and as trees/brush, are not supposed to be mixed in with regular trash). Instead, why don't you consider bringing your tree to the 9th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire?

Mayor Kimberley Driscoll and the Salem Park and Recreation Commission invite you to join in the fun at the City of Salem's 9th Annual Christmas Tree Bonfire Friday, January 6, 2012 6:30 PM
at Dead Horse Beach at Salem Willows. There will be free hot chocolate & music by The Gathering
In case of rain/snow/wind the event reschedule date will be Saturday, January 7th.
(check www.salem.com for rescheduling information)

Trees may be brought to Dead Horse Beach that evening, dropped off at the beach starting January 3rd, or left out for curbside pickup which will begin January 3, 2012.
Citywide Christmas Tree Curbside Collection will also take place as scheduled January 9–13, 2012.
You can leave your trees next to the dumpster for city pickup
Please remove all lights and decorations from your tree.
